It can be harmful to the human body because of genetically modified food. What are gmo foods? Genetically modified organisms involve genetic engineering. Genetic engineering involves taking genes from completely different species and inserting them into the DNA of a plant or animal. This could affect our health long term (Smith) . Agriculture is being impacted by genetic engineering. Did you know roundup ready crops are genetically modified? The main ingredient in roundup crops is glyphosate. Glyphosate may be the reason why genetically modified foods are harmful to our health. In the United States, 93 percent of the soybeans and 85 percent of the corn planted by farmers were roundup ready crops (Hannah Kincaid). GMO foods are creeping up the food chain very fast. The roundup ready corn and soybeans are in the ingredients for many consumer food products. Therefore, most people do not realize that they are consuming gmo foods. The rise in allergies and illness are caused by people consuming genetically modified foods. Doctor John Boyles, an Ohio allergist, believes that people should never eat genetically modified food because it has contributed to the rise in severe allergies (Smith). The American Academy of Environmental Medicine condemned the use of GMOs in our food supply in May of 2009. Genetically modified foods were condemned by the academy because they can cause serious health risks. Now more than 70% of the food supply in grocery stores across the United States contain GMOs (Smith). One of the world’s most renowned biologist, Pushpa M. Bhargava, believes that genetically modified organism are causing the recent rise of serious diseases and illnesses in the United States. The research of several animal studies, conducted by the American Academy of Emergency Medicine, shows evidence of a link between genetically modified foods and human health risks. Some of the diseases associated with the effects of genetic engineering include, infertility, immune disorders, faulty insulin regulation related to diabetes and changes in liver, kidney and spleen functioning (Smith). Federal government agencies like the F.D.A, Food and Drug Administration, the U.S.D.A, United States Department of Agriculture, and the E.PA., Environmental Protection Agency, all believe that genetically modified foods are safe for the human body. With that being said, these agencies do not require separate testing for genetically modified foods. These agencies do not believe that gmo foods are any different from organic foods (Huso and Kellner). A recent example is the FDA approval of genetically modified salmon for human consumption. Biotech company, AquaBounty Technologies, developed a modified fish by splicing a growth hormone into their DNA. With no requirement by the Food and Drug Administration for genetically modified foods to be labeled as such, consumers are unable to determine what foods are safe. ( Huso and Kellner ). A different view on genetic engineering comes from Timothy Griffin from Tufts University. He believes that there is no apparent evidence to support the claim that genetically modified organisms pose a health risk. Timothy Griffin is the director of agriculture at Tufts University. Mr. Griffin looked at different research studies and found no evidence that genetically modified organisms could hurt the human body ("Report: GMO”). Even though Timothy Griffin from Tufts University has a different perspective on the harmful effects of genetically modified organisms, many people do not believe the government's claims on the safety of gmo’s. Have you ever wondered what is in gluten-free ingredients? Consumers would be flabbergasted if they knew that most gluten-free food sold in the United States contains genetically modified organisms. Why are gluten-free foods genetically modified? The reason behind this is because the primary ingredient is corn. Around 85% of the corn grown in the United States is genetically modified. The corn is genetically modified by scientist to produce its own insecticide. Which then becomes an ingredient in gluten free food items (Mike Adams). In conclusion, the evidence shows that genetically modified organisms are detrimental to the human body. Many health conditions are connected with the consumption of genetically modified foods. The research supports the harmful effects of genetically modified foods on the health and well being of the human body.
